Title:
Hybrid quantum-classical methods for better quantum gates and quantum algorithms

Abstract:
A quantum computing system consists of a classical controller and a quantum processing unit working in tandem, where the former often uses optimization techniques to steer the latter. There are two prima facie different applications of his idea: One is the calibration of quantum processors within the framework of optimal control theory. Here, I will discuss how one can characterize a quantum system automatically while finding suitable controls for a given task, using the C3 (combined characterization and control) methodology. The other is the execution of quantum algorithms, e.g., for combinatorial optimization, using parameterized quantum circuits. Here, I will describe a few recent results on semiclassical algorithms and the use of alternative drivers to understand the conditions for quantum advantage. I will highlights points towards unifying both perspectives.
